Fiber optic modems are often used in data communication systems to bridge long distances at high data rates. Fiber optic systems are particularly immune to electromagnetic interference and therefore very suitable for harsh industrial environments. Westermo products can transmit data at up to 12 Mbit/s over distances up to 80 km depending on the fiber type.

Point to point RS-232, PROFIBUS DP and RS-422/485 for point to point communication.

Fiber line sharing devices RS-232, PROFIBUS DP and RS-422/485 in multi-point, ring or redundant ring applications and LonWorks.

The new fiber optic modems, ODW-7XX, are available with 1 or 2 SFP slots, offering many possible configurations.

ODW-612 is a fiber-optic modems designed for redundant ring applications where rapid reconfiguration times are required. In case of a link failure, the ODW-612 will switch over to a multi-drop topology within a few milliseconds, without any noticeable disturbance to the data traffic. The ODW-612 is designed for harsh industrial usage as well as road or railway installations meeting industrial level EMC specifications and having a wide operating temperature range. The maximum distance of a fibre link depends on selected transceiver and fibretype.Fibre distances up to 80 km (50 miles) are possible on each leg of the ring meaning huge rings over 1000 km (621.4 miles) in circumference could be created. The ODW-612 is able to automatically detect the data rate of the connected PROFIBUS-DP device and hence needs minimal configuration prior to use.The unit also has a retiming function that eliminates the problem of jitter and hence ensures reliable communications in all situations. The unit has LED indication to display fault conditions as well as relay contacts that can be connected to a PLC or similar device to allow network problems to be diagnosed at a central point.

The ODW-710-F2 has been designed to allow the use of fiber optic cables on Profibus DP networks. The design allows the use of a range of Westermo verified SFP (Small Form Pluggable) transceivers which can provide solutions with, for example, only a single fiber or distances up to 120 km. Both multidrop networks and redundant rings can be formed using a mixture of transceiver types.

      • Speed, duplex and Auto-negotiation
      • Flow control
      • Link fault forward
    • Auto MDI/MDI-X
    • Extended temperature range –25°C to +70°C
    • Redundant power and wide DC input range
The MCW-211 is an Industrial Ethernet FX/TX Media Converter. The MCW-211 convert data between Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX and 100 Base-FX. The unit is easy to use and install caused by auto-negotiation of speed and duplex and auto-crossover and auto-polarity on 10 Mbit/s. The media converter is be transparent for large frames (VLAN or QoS). It is also possible to set speed, duplex and flow control via DIP-switches. The FX side supports Far-End-Fault indication. A link fault from either side shall be forwarded to the other side, Link Fault Forwarding. Via DIP-switches it is possible to control if both sides or just one (either) side supports LFF. MCW-211 has a wide DC power input range with polarity protection and redundant power from dual sources. With extended temperature range supported as standard the MCW-211 is designed to be used the harshest environments.

The LRW-102/102PP is completely transparent to the protocol therefore installation is simple as no new network addresses are needed. The LRW-102 is equipped with either one (LRW-102PP) or two pairs of fiber optic receivers and transmitters. This allows the user to build either point to point, bus, or redundant ring topology fiber links. The LRW-102/102PP has a built-in redundancy system that provides for fault tolerance in the fiber rings.
