MDI 100 Layer 2 Managed Switches from Westermo

Westermo Data Communications has expanded the range of i-line industrial communications products with the addition of four managed layer 2 Ethernet switches. The new devices are designed for managing complex networks that may include redundant rings and long distances. Featuring a wide range of port configurations and transmission speeds, the switches are suitable for use within machine building, building automation, factory automation and CCTV surveillance applications.

To meet the demanding requirements of these industrial applications, the Westermo i-line products offer industrial grade construction and reliable and consistent operation.
The devices are DIN rail mountable and handle a wide input range from 12 to 48 VDC. They have dual 24VDC power screw terminal inputs making them suitable for applications where a secondary power source is used to maintain high system integrity. The rugged IP-31 rated aluminium alloy enclosure is ideal for heat dissipation and enables a wide operating temperature range from –20° to +70°C degrees. The units have no moving parts and industrial grade components are used.

The switches are available with ten, twelve or eighteen ports. The MDI-110-F3 is a ten port device with seven 10/100TX Fast Ethernet ports and three 10/100 RJ-45 / 100FX SFP (Small Form factor Pluggable) combo ports. The SFP ports enable users to choose from a variety of transceivers including SX, LX, LHX, ZX and XD, that support transmission distances of up to 2km in multi-mode or 120km in single-mode. The MDI-110-F3G version has seven 10/100TX ports and three Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo ports that supports the increasing desire for large size file transmission. The three Gigabit ports are used to form a ring network and connect to an upper level switch, couple ring or public server.

MDI-112-F4G offers eight 10/100TX ports, two gigabit SFP and two Gigabit RJ-45/ SFP combo ports and is designed for applications requiring gigabit redundant rings. The switch can operate as an 8+4G, 7+3G or 10+2G switch. The two gigabit combo ports support 10Mb,100Mb or 1000Mb speeds, and are auto-negotiated or software configured. The 8+4G design allows aggregating up to four 100Mb rings plus two Gigabit rings. The MDI-118-F2G is designed for applications requiring high port access and has sixteen 10/100TX ports and two 1000Base-T/Gigabit SFP combo ports. The 16+2G design allows the aggregation of up to eight 100Mb rings plus one Gigabit ring.

All four devices are equipped with a wide range of Layer 2 network features including comprehensive VLAN (Virtual LAN) support for up to 64 virtual networks that increases security and network bandwidth and improves manageability. VLANs can also be allocated to particular switch ports and centrally configured. The IGMPv1/v2/v3 (Internet Group Management Protocol) snooping provides filtering techniques to manage the flow of data around redundant ring networks in such a way as to optimise the bandwidth “ ideal for video streaming applications.

A secure web interface, accessed via a VPN tunnel or using SNMP, enables the easy configuration of redundant rings and VLANs and setting up basic firewalls from anywhere in the network. For more advanced configuration, the intuitive SSH encrypted Command Line Interface (CLI) allows fine tuning without the need for a reboot. Configuration can also be performed directly via a console port.
