Serial to Ethernet Converter

A Serial Ethernet Adapter might take many different forms and will be able to perform any of the functions below. It will not only provide remote connection to serial devices. It will also give the user the possibility to:

  • Extend the life of existing serial equipment.
  • Simplify equipment diagnostics and maintenance.
  • Save pathway and line usage costs for long-distance communication.
  • Integrate peripherals into an existing overall infrastructure.

Each connected device can be accessed directly over the local network, via router, a WAN or (if enabled) through the Internet.

  • Use the same error correction mechanisms linking millions of PCs world-wide.
  • Share data with any number of computers and other resources on your network.
  • Replace limited distance serial connections.
  • Use a high number of long distance, virtual COM ports without the need for bulky cabling.

  • The EDW-100 is an is an Industrial Ethernet to serial adapter or Ethernet Terminal Server, designed for industrial use in harsh environments. The unit use standard TCP/IP protocols together with serial equipment, it allows almost any serial devices to interface through a new or existing Ethernet network. Two EDW-100 units can be used to create a simple point to point link or multiple units can be linked to form a one to many application all using Ethernet as the medium to transport the data. A point to point application can be configured with both UDP and TCP, if TCP is used the unit can act both as a client or as a server. Configuration of the unit is simple using theWeb-tool or via Telnet. It is also possible to configure speed and duplex via DIP-switch, this setting can be override by the Web-tool.

A special adjusted 2 port licence of the virtual COM-software, Serial/IP from Tactical Software, are included with EDW-100 and EDW-120. If there is a requirement for more than two ports, a new licence must be ordered from Westermo. Note that the new licence can not be based on the delivered 2 port licence. Possible options are 4, 8, 16, 24 or 48 ports. For price information, please contact Westermo.

In a point to point application the EDW-100 can be to replace or extend a cable link. The distance between the EDW-100 units is only limited by the size of the LAN. Data can be sent across the network using ether UDP or TCP. If TCP is used EDW-100 can be configured both as a client and a server. A typical application would be a SCADA or Data logging application interrogating a sensor or PLC.

MCW211 Industrial Ethernet to Fiber Optic Media Converter
MCW211/MCW211EX Industrial Ethernet to Fiber Optic Media Converter
    Features Include:
    • Conversion between Ethernet 10/100Base-TX and 100Base-FX
    • Transparent for large frames (QoS and VLAN)
    • Galvanic isolation and enhanced surge/transient protection
    • DIP-switches for:
      • Speed, duplex and Auto-negotiation
      • Flow control
      • Link fault forward
    • Auto MDI/MDI-X
    • Extended temperature range –25C to +70C
    • Redundant power and wide DC input range
The MCW-211 is an Industrial Ethernet FX/TX Media Converter. The MCW-211 convert data between Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX and 100 Base-FX. The unit is easy to use and install caused by auto-negotiation of speed and duplex and auto-crossover and auto-polarity on 10 Mbit/s. The media converter is be transparent for large frames (VLAN or QoS). It is also possible to set speed, duplex and flow control via DIP-switches. The FX side supports Far-End-Fault indication. A link fault from either side shall be forwarded to the other side, Link Fault Forwarding. Via DIP-switches it is possible to control if both sides or just one (either) side supports LFF. MCW-211 has a wide DC power input range with polarity protection and redundant power from dual sources. With extended temperature range supported as standard the MCW-211 is designed to be used the harshest environments.

The MCW-211-F1G-T1G is an unmanaged media converter with one SFP fiber port and one copper port, all supporting 100 Mbit/s or Gbit Ethernet. It is designed for easy use in heavy duty industrial, maritime and rail trackside applications. The unit supports 802.1Q long packets which allow all standard industrial Ethernet protocols to be used.

The MCW-211-F1G-T1G is designed for use in industrial applications with dual 10 to 57 VDC power input. The unique “tri-galvanic” isolation provides isolation between the ports and the power supply, and avoids ground loop currents. The IP21 rating ensures that the unit can be installed in locations where condensed water may occur. Only industrial grade components are used which gives the MCW-211-F1G-T1G an MTBF of 1.426.000 hours and ensures a long service life.

A wide operating temperature range of –40 to +74 C (–40 to +165 F) can be achieved with no moving parts.
